What is an air hockey table? An air hockey table is a two-player game usually found within amusement arcades, amusement parks and entertainment venues. It is a large rectangle table with goals at either end (much like real life hockey). The game users a puck similar to ice hockey which semi-floats suspended on the air hockey table with air that is pumped through small holes on the playing surface that are active during playing time. There are many modern improvements on the classic game with newer tables including affects such as flashing lights and additional game features such as the popular Pac-Man Smash air hockey table that has some models which include a multi-ball style feature that can be unlocked and also pay out tickets to winners or for beating high scores.
The aim of the game is to strike the puck into the opponent's goal, which they defend using a round plastic paddle. The player can use the paddle to hit the puck toward the opponent’s goal or defend their own goal against incoming shots. Each time a player scores by getting the puck into the opponent's goal, it counts as one point. Typically, air hockey games are played to a minimum of 7 goals, with the first player to reach the set score declared the winner. However, the goal limit can vary, with some machines set for fewer goals, such as 5 or 6, and others reaching up to 15 goals, depending on the arcade operator's settings.
Air hockey tables are commonly found in amusement arcades, bowling alleys, cinemas, and even shopping malls. However, the best air hockey experiences are typically found in amusement arcades, where machines are well looked-after. Notable locations with high-quality air hockey tables include Coral Island Arcade in Blackpool, which features several Sonic Allstars air hockey machines. In Skegness, the Lucky Strike Arcade offers multiple air hockey tables on its first floor. Further south, Leisureland Arcade in Great Yarmouth boasts a Pac-Man Smash air hockey table, while closer to London, Kino Amusements in Walton provides family fun with its colourful ‘Wizard’ air hockey table.
