Funland Amusements Arcade Whitby

Funland is located on Pier Road on the north side of the Harbour, beside the River Esk. It is the middle of three popular Whitby amusement arcades along this busy strip, which is well visited by tourists heading from the station and nearby car parks towards the beach, harbour and coastal paths. 

Funland Amusements looks like a traditional seaside arcade from the outside, but there is much more to discover inside. The venue features modern LED lighting and dark, atmospheric décor alongside a colourful collection of glowing arcade machines. The upstairs 'Retro Zone' is equally impressive, offering a great range of vintage arcade machines and a four-lane mini bowling alley, making it a great hangout for families and arcade enthusiasts.

The arcade has several wide double-door entrances. Due to the gradient of the road, there is a small step on the left side of the building which gradually disappears towards the right, providing step-free, wheelchair-capable access at the right-hand side of the venue.

Claw Machines

Visitors will find a small foyer area just inside the entrance, where the bulk of the claw machines are located, making them hard for passers-by to resist having a go. Most crane games offer a quality range of branded prizes in various sizes, including Jellycat, Labubu, Pokémon characters and hot dog sausage dogs.

There are many Prize Grab and Rainbow Happy Games claws and also several mini claws for small hands, including Diamond Castle, Shining Cube and Toy Stack. Popular standouts include Win Fall Revolution and the ever-fun Trap Door, which is like a wheel spinner and claw game rolled into one.

Childrens Arcade Games

Upstairs, parents will find a four-player Bump-N-Smash, a fun arcade driving game for kids (similar to Mario Kart). There is also a selection of half-sized machines ideal for smaller players, including the previously mentioned mini claws and Find-a-Key golden egg grabbers with instant-win prize lockers. There are also a couple of kiddie rides dotted around the venue.

Coin Pushers

Funland Amusements has a great range of classic and modern coin pushers, including old favourites such as Pac-Man Ball, Rollercoaster, Lady Bug, Snakes-n-Ladders, Rainbow Riches and, of course, a Crompton's Carousel.

Modern pushers include Bullseye, Best of British, Prize Quest and Key to Success, with the latter two offering instant-win prizes. The shelf prizes on all the pushers are generous, with all 2p machines well stocked with coins. There are also multiple two and ten-pence change machines across the venue, making it convenient and easy to keep playing for hours.

Retro Zone

Heading upstairs, the funky lights and cool décor continue into a fully fledged retro shrine, with vintage arcade signage covering the walls alongside iconic brands such as Atari and Sega. There is also colourful artwork celebrating games and movies including Tron, T2, Donkey Kong and Space Invaders.

The open-plan upstairs gaming area is tastefully arranged into different sections, with matching wall art helping give each area its own character. The result is a fantastic retro-inspired space packed with classic and retro arcade favourites.

Retro Video Game Cabinets

A row of classic video game cabinets includes The Simpsons Arcade Game by Konami, Midway's Galaxian, Ms. Pac-Man, Track & Field, Donkey Kong, Defender and several more.

Retro Racing Machines

The retro racing section features a great selection of older driving games, including Sega Rally, Daytona USA, Sega Manx TT Super Bike and the original Super Bikes by Raw Thrills.

Retro Shooting Games

Fans of classic shooting games can find the two-player Point Blank and Time Crisis 2, alongside a single-player version of Sega's classic Star Wars Trilogy arcade game.

Pinball Machines

Even the pinball table section continues the retro theme, with funky artwork decorating the surrounding walls. Machines include Terminator 2, The Addams Family, Ghostbusters and Avengers.

There is also an Atari Pong table retro remake which is a very fitting addition to the space.

Classic Arcade Games

Found both downstairs and upstairs, mixed in with the amazing retro machines, are what we would call arcade classics: different types of games and machines that have stood the test of time.

These include modern takes on classic arcade formulas, such as the two-player Furious Speed DX arcade racer, the popular four-player Minecraft Dungeons with collectible trading cards and the cult classic Guitar Hero Arcade.

NBA Basketball Arcade

At the other end of the Retro Zone is a row of fun NBA team-branded basketball arcade machines surrounded by eye-catching urban NBA artwork featuring popular teams.

Dance & Air Hockey Machines

In the middle of the Retro Zone are four well-placed air hockey tables with eye-catching neon lighting, alongside two arcade dance machines that are ideal for teens to hang out and expend some energy.

Arcade Shooters

Upstairs at one end of the Retro Zone is a section dedicated to classic arcade shooting games, including Terminator Salvation, House of the Dead 3, Time Crisis 5 and Sega's Rambo. Dotted around the venue are further shooters, including Skill Shooter from Electrocoin, The Walking Dead, AR Sniper, Space Invaders Frenzy and a Wild West Shootout.

Fairground Games

As well as its classic and retro arcade games, Funland has a selection of fairground-inspired games, including World Football Pro, the Derby Day horse racer, Lane Master Bowling and On Target, a modern take on the traditional arcade shooting gallery. Other attractions include Space Guard, Pixel Chase and several basketball shootout games.

VR Arcade Games

Funland also has a four-person VR Theatre experience, allowing families and friends to enjoy immersive virtual reality together. There is a selection of VR experiences to choose from, making it a fun group activity within the arcade.

Fruit Machines

There is a decent range of low-stakes British fruit machines here, including standalone cabinets such as Doctors and Nurses, Deal or No Deal, Pots of Gold and a classic Bar-X Sevens by Electrocoin.

Venue Verdict

Funland is a standout destination for arcade fans, with its upstairs Retro Zone offering a genuinely impressive collection of rare and rarely seen machines that are still fully playable. The funky lighting, atmospheric décor and retro artwork give the whole area a fantastic sense of character, while the popular pinball machines are another major highlight.

Downstairs, a strong selection of claw machines and instant-win games provides plenty of chances to take home a prize, while mini bowling, air hockey, kids' games and VR make the venue an equally good hangout for families. Whether you are chasing arcade nostalgia or simply looking for somewhere fun to spend an hour or two in Whitby, Funland is well worth exploring.
