Nikolas Shaw’s Silver Dollar Arcade is a large amusement venue located on Foreshore Road opposite the West Pier Harbour wall and South Bay Beach in the heart of Scarborough’s tourist area. Shaw’s is a long-established name in Yorkshire entertainment and operates several venues in Scarborough, including two Shaws Amusements arcades, Silver Dollar and the Opera House Casino.
The arcade has a long frontage with three main entrances and step-free access, making it wheelchair friendly. The front section focuses on traditional seaside arcade games, while a sizable adult gaming area is located towards the rear. Next door is the popular Lord Nelson pub, while two food kiosks on the other side serve classic seaside fast food to passers-by.
Kids Arcade Games
Outside the arcade is a fine selection of kiddie rides, including little cars, teacups and a helicopter, providing plenty of fun photo opportunities for families. There are also several child-sized machines on the frontage, including Find-a-Key with instant-win prize lockers and Prize Every Time mini claws, perfect for younger players who want to be sure of taking home a prize. They even have a Sweet Land game, where youngsters can win sweets and lollies.
Claw Machines
Inside the Silver Dollar Arcade, visitors will find an attractive selection of Maxx Grab claw machines alongside E-Claws and several Skill Cut Winner games, where players try to cut the string holding a large teddy prize. The crane games are stocked with a fun selection of quality prizes, including branded plushies such as Winnie the Pooh, Lilo & Stitch and other popular characters.
Coin Pushers
For coin pusher fans, Silver Dollar is particularly strong, with a fantastic range of modern games including Rainbow Riches, Rock-n-Reels, Busy Bees, Jurassic Park, Looney Tunes, Sweet Falls, Justice League and Gold Streak.
There are also some classic 2p machines here, including Coronation Street, Cromptons Carousel, Whittaker's Camptown Races and the eye-catching Mega Sevens Jackpot. The coin pushers are well stocked with coins and a great range of shelf prizes, including toys, mini plushies, keychains and even £5 notes.
Fruit Machines
Much of the main arcade area is given over to classic low-stakes fruit machines, with a mix of newer titles and traditional favourites. Triple-row machines include Clockwork Oranges, Golden X Winner and a large Deal or No Deal community game complete with its giant gameshow-style feature board.
There are also several standalone cabinets, including a dome-top Adders & Ladders, while the low-boy section includes Lady Luck Good as Gold, Electrocoin’s Bar X Bullion, Magic X and several others. Three Bongo Burnout Skill Ball machines also add some quick-fire bingo-style action.
One of the real treats at Silver Dollar is its collection of fully working vintage slot machines. Four Jubilee Riviera one-armed bandits are mounted together on a custom Silver Dollar stand, creating a particularly striking display that fits the venue perfectly.
Arcade explorers can also find some vintage wooden penny arcade machines, including Allwin-style machines and another interesting example called Bryans Bullion. Both are playable and accept modern two pence pieces.
Slots Lounge
As mentioned earlier, the adult gaming slots area spans the rear of the venue and features an excellent selection of modern £100 and £500 jackpot terminals from manufacturers such as Blueprint Gaming. Silver Dollar also has a good selection of big jackpot traditional fruit machines, with favourites including Party Time and dome-top Bullion Bars among others.
Venue Verdict
Silver Dollar is a great example of a traditional British seaside arcade, focusing on the fun of playing the machines rather than ticket collecting or flashy gimmicks. A strong mix of coin pushers, claw machines, fruit machines and modern gaming sits alongside some fascinating vintage pieces, creating an arcade with plenty of character.
Whether hunting for prizes, enjoying the 2p pushers, trying the claws or having a spin on a classic one-armed bandit, there is plenty to enjoy. Combined with its lively seafront setting and authentic seaside atmosphere, Silver Dollar is well worth a visit while exploring Scarborough.
